UGC calls for strengthening District Level Committees to combat ragging

Thrissur: In a move to curb ragging in higher education institutions, UGC has urged District Collectors and State Chief Secretaries to strengthen District Level Monitoring Committees. This initiative comes in light of a recent Supreme Court directive addressing the issue of ragging.

The UGC has employed stringent measures to tackle ragging in institutional colleges and universities. Emphasizing the need for decisive action against ragging incidents, the Commission has issued directives to institute heads, urging them to enforce regulations rigorously. Moreover, the UGC has also put forth a proposal for the establishment of district level monitoring committees. These committees, crucial in the fight against ragging, are mandated to include heads of respective universities or educational institutions, under the leadership of district collectors, deputy commissioners, or district magistrates.

Moreover, the composition of these committees extends to the Superintendent of Police, Additional District Magistrate, representatives from the local media and student organizations.
