Youth and brother-in-law drown in Varkala’s Kappil beach

Varkala: Two youths from the same family drowned while bathing in the sea at Kappil beach. The deceased have been identified as Anwar (34) from Kollam Kottarakkara and his brother-in-law Al Ameen (24).

The accident occurred at Kappil beach around 12:30 pm on Sunday. Anwar, his wife Amina, their two-year-old son Adam Seyyan, Amina's brother Al Ameen, and cousin Arshad had arrived at the Kappil shore in the afternoon. Anwar and Al Ameen entered the sea while Amina, her son, and cousin remained on the shore. The duo were swept away by the strong currents and they drowned eventually. 

Upon hearing the commotion, fishermen and other people on the shore rushed to the scene to search for the missing men. Al Ameen's body was recovered around 1 PM and Anwar's body was found around 2 PM. Ayroor police and the fire brigade had rushed to the spot.

A lifeguard was assigned to Kappil Beach but was off duty on Sunday. The bodies were taken to Parippally Medical College. Anwar was an online taxi driver in Thiruvananthapuram, while expatriate Al Ameen had come home for a vacation. The tragedy occurred a day before his scheduled return.
