Thrissur swine flu alert: 12-year-old boy tests positive for H1N1; Illegal pig farm shut down

Thrissur: An H1N1 case has been confirmed in a 12-year-old boy at Vellikulangara in the 10th ward of Mattathur Panchayat of Thrissur district. The child, who is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karukutty, is reported to be in stable condition, according to hospital authorities.

Following the diagnosis, the local panchayat administration and the Health Department issued strict directives to immediately shut down an illegal pig farm operating in the vicinity.

Inspection reveals unlicensed operation

Action was initiated after local residents led by Panchayat member A A Rafeeq submitted a formal complaint to the Mattathur Panchayat regarding the facility. On Tuesday, a joint team of panchayat officials and health officers inspected the farm located in the Kattippokkam Pattarakkund area.

The inspection revealed that the facility, housing nearly 2,000 pigs, was operating on private land without a valid license. Officials subsequently issued a mandate directing the farm to completely cease all operations within one month.

Environmental and health concerns

Local residents had raised severe concerns over the facility's sanitation standards, reporting that a foul stench emanating from the farm spread up to two kilometres away toward Nayattukundu. Furthermore, untreated wastewater from the farm was being discharged directly into the Vellikulangara Valiyathodu stream, creating major public health and environmental hazards.

Local health authorities have heightened surveillance in the surrounding area to monitor and prevent any potential further spread.
