No license needed; Air Gun-related crimes on the rise in Kerala

Air gun-related crimes are on the rise in Kerala due to lack of licensing requirements, allowing anyone to purchase them. 

Recently, air guns have claimed the lives of three persons, one in Changaramkulam in Malappuram, Haripad in Alappuzha and Aluva in Ernakulam. While shooting from a distance may not cause serious injuries, close-range shots can be dangerous. In 2023 alone, there were 10 such incidents.

The issue gained attention after a woman was shot with an air gun in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. The incident occurred at Vanchiyoor West Fort.

Air guns use pellets instead of bullets, and these pellets are usually sharp and pointed. These guns operate using air pressure, which can be dangerous if a pellet penetrates the head or chest deeply.

Incidents of air guns, typically used to scare away birds, being used against humans are increasing.

Air guns can be purchased from online sites by providing any identity card. Prices range from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000. Since buyers do not need a license, authorities have no clear information about who possesses air guns.

There are also reports that some guns falling under the category of firearms, which require a license, are being sold under the name of air guns.
