Kozhikode: District Medical Officer Dr. V Jayasree on Thursday said that the Shigella infection found here has not reached the spreading stage. The bacteria strain found in Kallambara of Feroke has no connection to that found in Kottamparamba.

Five samples were tested and the presence of bacteria was found in two of them, she added.

Shigellosis mainly affects children below five years. The disease can worsen all of a sudden. Seven in the district have been confirmed of the disease. Another six have displayed the symptoms. However, the disease can be checked with super chlorination and there is no need to worry, DMO further said.

The health department on Wednesday had confirmed Shigellosis at Kashayapadi of Kallambara, the 22nd division of Feroke municipality. A 1.5-year-old boy was confirmed of the disease.

The toddler was admitted to a private hospital in Chungam due to severe stomach pain three days back. Later he was shifted to another private hospital in Kozhikode for expert treatment. He tested positive for the bacterial infection later.

Following this, the Feroke taluk hospital authorities conducted super chlorination in wells of 110 houses in the area.

Health department urged the public to drink only boiled water and to wash hands with soap and water. People with any symptoms should inform the health department, they further stated.
