Thiruvananthapuram: Resul Pookutty explained that the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy’s decision to withdraw six films from the festival followed a request from the central government, which warned that screening these films could strain India’s diplomatic relations.

The decision was made in consultation with the Chief Secretary and prioritised national interest.

Majority of films cleared for screening

While six films were withheld, the Center approved the screening of the remaining 13 of the 19 films initially held back. This overnight clearance came after the state government had announced the screening of all previously restricted films.

Chairman’s absence at IFFK

Pookutty revealed that his physical presence at the festival was not possible due to prior commitments in London for a film shoot. Despite his absence, he maintained active involvement in managing the festival and overseeing operations remotely.

Academy stands with survivors

Addressing allegations against filmmaker P.T. Kunju Muhammed, Pookutty stated that the Academy acted appropriately and promptly. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting survivors of assault, underscoring its responsibility in maintaining ethical standards.

The incident highlights the delicate balance between creative freedom and national interest, as the Film Academy navigates the sensitivities of international relations while managing a prestigious cultural festival.
