The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday (June 11) issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, warning of widespread rain activity across several districts. The alert includes both orange and yellow categories, indicating the likelihood of very heavy and heavy rainfall at isolated places between June 11 and June 15, 2026.

The department has also cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely during this period.

Orange alert for very heavy rain in Ernakulam and Thrissur

An orange alert has been issued for districts where very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas.

On Thursday (June 11), Ernakulam and Thrissur are under orange alert. On Friday (June 12), Ernakulam and Idukki will be under the same alert.

The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours. The forecast suggests that such intense rainfall will occur in isolated pockets rather than uniformly across entire districts.

Yellow alert for heavy rain across multiple districts

A yellow alert has been issued for several districts over the five-day period, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall events.

On Thursday (June 11), the alert covers Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. On Friday (June 12), Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod are on alert.

On Saturday (June 13), Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod come under the alert. On Sunday (June 14), Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram are included. On Monday (June 15), Alappuzha and Ernakulam remain under yellow alert.

A yellow alert corresponds to heavy rainfall in isolated places, defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

The IMD has also flagged the likelihood of thunderstorms with lightning during the forecast period, indicating continued unstable weather conditions across Kerala over the next five days.

Advisory on possible school closures

The IMD forecast has also raised the possibility of temporary disruptions to normal life, including educational institutions. Schools and colleges in areas affected by heavy or very heavy rainfall may be closed if district authorities issue specific orders based on local conditions.

Students and parents have been advised to depend only on official updates from district collectors and verified notices from educational institutions regarding closures or schedule changes.
