Kannur Jail stops selling mutton biryani, banana chips: Here's why

Kannur: The Kannur Central Jail has stopped distributing mutton biryani and banana chips, which were offered under the Food for Freedom project. The jail was the only prison in the state providing these items, with mutton biryani priced at ₹100 and banana chips at ₹260 per kilo.
The production was stopped due to rising mutton prices, a decline in plantain production within the prison, and increased market prices, said jail authorities. Due to these reasons, they have decided not to invest in products that were incurring losses.
The jail continues to produce around 782,000 chapatis monthly, alongside other dishes such as vegetable curry, egg curry, chicken curry, chicken kebab, chicken chilli, and chocolate.
Earlier, there were plans to expand into snack production due to the popularity of chapati and biryani but no further products were introduced.
Jail products are available at two counters near the Central Jail and from food vans at Thaliparamba, Kannur Old Bus Stand, Thalassery, and Koothuparamba bus stands.
