Kannur: A probe is underway after several mobile phones were recovered from the Kannur Central Jail, City Police Commissioner P Nidhin Raj said. The latest recovery was made during a routine inspection by jail staff, who found two smartphones concealed behind the first cell in the 10th block. This brings the total number of phones seized from the prison in the past week to five.

Commissioner Raj stated that preliminary investigations suggest some of the phones may have been smuggled in by throwing them over the prison walls. He also noted that thorough checks are being conducted on inmates, particularly when they are transported to and from court.

Speaking to the mediapersons, Kannur City Police Commissioner, IPS, Nidhin Raj said, "There have been several incidents involving the seizure of electronic devices, including mobile phones. The town police have registered cases related to this, and while some possibilities have been ruled out, others are still being investigated. We've filed two cases last month at the Kannur Town Police Station."

The Police Commissioner assured that the police and prison authorities are working together on the case. Police are also examining the electronic devices for forensic evidence.

"These cases involve people trying to smuggle mobile phones, especially when going to or returning from court. We are checking how these devices are brought in and who is involved. The investigation is ongoing, and we're following several leads. Right now, both the police and prison authorities are working together on this. Many such cases have come to light through reports from the prison superintendent. Each case is different, and we are examining the electronic devices for forensic evidence. Once the full investigation is done, we will be able to share more details," Raj said.
