Periya double murder case verdict today: Heavy police security at Kalliot in Kasaragod

Kasaragod: The Periya double murder case, involving the brutal killings of Youth Congress workers Kripesh (21) and Sarath Lal (23) in Kasaragod district, has drawn national attention due to its political implications. The case, which highlights alleged political rivalry, lists 24 accused, including prominent CPM leaders such as former MLA and CPM Kasaragod district secretariat member KV Kunhiraman.
The murder took place on February 17, 2019. Initially investigated by the Kerala Police, the case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following allegations of bias. The trial, lasting over two years, involved 154 prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses. Charges against the accused include murder, conspiracy, and destruction of evidence. Sixteen of the accused, including the prime accused and former Periya local committee member A Peethambaran, remain in judicial custody.
Heightened Security Measures:
In anticipation of the verdict, police have intensified security in Periya and Kalliot. A route march involving around 100 officers, led by ASP Dr. S Aparna and Bekal DYSP V V Manoj, was conducted across Kalliot, Periya and Echiladukkam. Surveillance has been increased, and leaders of both the Congress and CPM have been called for discussions to prevent any untoward incidents.
Community Reaction:
The verdict has sparked emotional responses from the families of the victims and the local community. On Friday, a mass prayer was held at the Kalliot Bhagavathy temple, attended by the victims’ families and locals. Sarath Lal’s parents, P K Satyanarayanan and Latha, sister Amrutha and Kripesh’s parents, P V Krishnan and Balamani, expressed hope for justice after a long and arduous legal battle.

The outcome of this case is expected to have far-reaching political ramifications in Kerala, as several CPM leaders are among the accused.
