Pala assembly elections: Jose K Mani faces do-or-die battle to reclaim KC(M) stronghold

Pala, a historic stronghold of the Kerala Congress (M), has become the stage for a high-stakes political showdown ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. For KC(M) chairman Jose K. Mani, the upcoming contest is a do-or-die situation; reclaiming the seat his party lost in 2019 is crucial to restoring both his personal political legacy and the party’s dominance in the district.
Sitting MLA Mani C Kappan, who stunned the constituency in the 2019 byelection following the death of KM Mani, stands as the formidable incumbent, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) introduces Shone George as a third contender, making the battle even more unpredictable.
KC(M) stronghold
Pala has long been a KC(M) bastion, dominated by the party for over five decades under the leadership of the late KM Mani. However, the 2019 byelection saw Mani C. Kappan break that legacy, creating a political shockwave that reshaped local alliances.
Jose K. Mani, as heir to the party, has since worked to steer KC(M) back into prominence with Left Democratic Front (LDF) backing, but the loss of the seat has left him under intense pressure. Reclaiming Pala is no longer just a political objective; it is a test of survival for KC(M) in its former heartland.
Voter profile and electoral challenge
Pala constituency had 1,84,760 registered voters in 2021, with female voters slightly outnumbering male voters. In the last Assembly elections, Mani C. Kappan won as an independent with 50.43% of votes, defeating Jose K. Mani by 15,378 votes. The BJP’s Prameeladevi J secured 7.85%, highlighting the emerging three-way contest.
High voter turnout, 74.82% in 2021, reflects an engaged electorate that will be pivotal in determining whether Jose K. Mani can stage a comeback. The contest will test his ability to mobilise loyal KC(M) supporters while countering Kappan’s growing influence and the NDA’s aggressive entry into central Travancore.
For Jose K. Mani, the 2026 election is more than a fight for Pala; it is a battle to restore his party’s credibility and protect its legacy. Losing the seat again could further weaken KC(M)’s influence in the region and cast doubt over Mani’s leadership. Conversely, a win would reassert his authority and signal that KC(M) can reclaim its historical strongholds despite shifting political equations.
