Beyond music: P Jayachandran's foray into acting with 4 Malayalam movie roles

Paliyath Jayachandran, the renowned Malayalam singer, who left an indelible mark with his songs, also ventured into acting, appearing in four notable films during his career.

Jayachandran made his acting debut in 1979 with the film Krishnapparunthu, directed by O Ramdas, where he played the lead role. This marked the beginning of his acting career in Malayalam cinema, which, though brief, left a lasting impact. 

In 1983, he starred in Lekhayude Maranam Oru Flashback, directed and scripted by K G George, where he portrayed himself, adding a personal touch to the film.

Encouraged by MT Vasudevan Nair

In 1986, P Jayachandran was persuaded by legendary writer M T Vasudevan Nair to act in Nakhakshathangal, directed by Hariharan. Jayachandran took on the role of a Namboothiri, a character he felt at ease with due to his knowledge of cultural traditions. In addition to acting, he also lent his voice to two songs in the film, showcasing his dual talents.

After a long gap from acting, Jayachandran made his final appearance in the 2012 film Trivandrum Lodge, where he played the character Narayanan Potty. Following this film, he chose to step away from acting.

When asked by a journalist why he didn’t continue acting, Jayachandran humorously replied, “Is there no limit to what people can tolerate?” He often joked about his acting career, recalling a comment from music director A T Ummer, who asked, “Don’t you have any other work to do?” after seeing him act.
