Kozhikode, Kerala: Muslim League National Secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty on Monday said that dissatisfied members within the Left Democratic Front (LDF) are welcome to join the United Democratic Front (UDF), asserting that efforts are underway to strengthen the UDF’s base further.

His remark came amid ruling CPM-led LDF government’s poor performing in the recently concluded local body elections in the state.

“There are many dissatisfied leaders and workers within the LDF. Those who are ideologically compatible are expected to come over to our front. I am not naming anyone in particular. The UDF should be expanded, and its foundation strengthened,” Kunhalikutty said while speaking in Kozhikode.

He also criticised Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging that he repeatedly resorts to political manoeuvring and plays different cards to gain advantage.

“During the Lok Sabha elections, the Chief Minister played the minority card. In the local body elections, he played the majority card. It would be better if the Chief Minister stopped this card politics. Our stance is secular,” he added.

Kunhalikutty also claimed that the BJP has not made any real inroads in Kerala. He said the BJP’s victory in Thiruvananthapuram was a result of the LDF government’s poor performance, not due to the party’s growing strength in the state.

Clarifying reports about alliances, he said the Muslim League has never invited the Welfare Party to join the UDF. “The Welfare Party extended its support based on its own considerations,” Kunhalikutty said.
