KSRTC reports 1261 buses are over 15 years old; employees say real number exceeds 2,000

Kollam: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has stated that 1,261 buses over 15 years old are currently operating on the roads. This information was provided in response to an RTI request filed by the employees' association.

According to the corporation, 698 buses are between 14 and 15 years old, while 193 are 13-14 years old. Furthermore, 519 buses fall within the 12-13-year range, 362 are 11-12 years old, 154 are 10-11 years old, 857 are 9-10 years old, and 673 are 8-9 years old. KSRTC currently has a total of 4,717 buses in service.

However, employees argue that the actual number of old buses exceeds 2,000. They claim that ageing buses are frequently involved in accidents and often catch fire while in service. Reports of fire incidents occurring mid-journey have raised serious safety concerns.

Many buses continue to run despite having faulty brakes and wobbly doors. Employees say that even with regular maintenance, these issues persist. Interstate services are also being operated with old buses, increasing risks for passengers. Despite repeatedly informing workshop authorities about these problems, employees claim no effective action has been taken.
