NIT-Calicut imposes new rules to restrict activities after 11 pm in campus

Kozhikode: In a surprise move, NIT Kozhikode issued an order that restricts the movement of students after 11 p.m.
According to the order issued by the dean, students cannot enter or leave the campus after 11 p.m. The new rules are issued as part of the move to strengthen the night curfew at the campus and bring more discipline to those staying at the college hostel.
The dean's order includes a restriction on hostel timing to address students engaging in negative habits such as drinking and smoking. Those staying at hostels should reach their rooms before 11 p.m. The college canteen that was functional until late at night will also be closed after 11 p.m. from Wednesday.
Those failing to follow the rules will face the repercussions, including suspension. The order also places importance on students' diet and overall health.
Another reason that was considered was that sleeping late at night affects the students' mental health and their studies. It was noted that if sleep patterns are consistently disrupted, students of this age may be at risk for heart disease and diabetes. The dean claimed that the new rules do not in any way take away the freedom from the students.
Some students are organizing a protest against the order and will gather at the campus gate on Wednesday at 10 p.m. to show their opposition.
