Ramanattukara: The number of Hajj pilgrims choosing the Kozhikode embarkation point has significantly decreased due to rising costs. Last year, 10,515 pilgrims from Kerala opted for Kozhikode, but this year, the figure has dwindled to just 5,755.

This year, 15,231 pilgrims were selected through the Hajj Committee from Kerala. Among them, 4,026 chose Kannur, and 5,422 opted for Kochi, leading to the sharp decline in numbers at the Kozhikode embarkation point. Compared to other embarkation points, Kozhikode charges approximately Rs 40,000 more.

For pilgrims from Malabar, hiring a taxi to reach Kochi or Kannur and beginning their Hajj journey from there costs only a tenth of the additional charge at Kozhikode. Last year, Kozhikode airport was the choice for over 80% of the state’s Hajj pilgrims.

The disparity in fares emerged after the tendering process for Hajj flight services was completed. The Hajj Committee’s quoted fare from Kozhikode was Rs 1.24 lakh, whereas from Kannur and Kochi, the cost stood at just Rs 86,000. Pilgrims have criticized this as excessive. However, private Hajj groups operating from Kozhikode reportedly charge significantly less.

Even with connecting flights or direct services, the maximum cost for a return ticket to Saudi Arabia is around Rs 75,000.

The Hajj Committee organizes chartered flights for pilgrims, and the higher charges from Kozhikode is due to restrictions on large aircraft at Karipur airport. However, large aircraft operated for 18 years from Karipur until services were suspended following the 2020 plane crash.

Restoring these services could allow other airlines besides Air India to participate in tenders, possibly introducing connecting flights that would reduce costs. This could lead to a significant reduction in fares for Hajj pilgrims.
