Kerala weather update: Yellow alert issued for 5 districts as summer rains intensify

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala, predicting isolated heavy rainfall over the next few days. Residents are advised to stay cautious as summer showers are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Five-day rain forecast and alerts

A yellow alert has been declared for the following districts on April 6, 2026.

  • Kollam
  • Pathanamthitta
  • Alappuzha
  • Kottayam
  • Idukki

What to expect:

  • Isolated heavy rainfall: Precipitation levels between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm are expected within a 24-hour period.
  • Thunderstorms and lightning: Heavy spells will likely be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph.
  • Extended outlook: Unstable weather conditions and scattered thunderstorms are predicted to continue across the state until at least April 10 2026.

  • Stay indoors: Seek shelter in a safe building at the first sign of lightning.
  • Electrical safety: Disconnect household appliances and avoid using corded telephones during thunderstorms.
  • Travel caution: Avoid parking vehicles under trees and stay inside cars (with windows closed) if caught in a storm.
  • Fishermen warning: Those at sea or near the coast should exercise extreme caution due to unpredictable wind speeds.
