Kerala is taking a decisive step to connect its classrooms with the world. Scholar Connect, a new digital platform launched by the state, aims to systematically link Kerala’s higher education institutions with Malayali scholars and experts working across the globe — and also open doors for wider international academic collaboration.

The platform will be launched on February 11 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and has been developed by the Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC).

What is Scholar Connect?

Scholar Connect is a dedicated online portal designed to transform Kerala’s vast academic diaspora into a structured, long-term contributor to the state’s higher education system.

It brings together universities, colleges, faculty members, and globally based scholars on a single platform for sustained academic engagement. Kerala is the first state in India to institutionalise academic diaspora engagement through such a digital initiative.

Key features of Scholar Connect

  1. Virtual mentorship module: Faculty members in Kerala can post specific academic needs such as syllabus benchmarking, research design support, grant writing guidance, curriculum development, and internationalisation strategies. Registered scholars respond based on their expertise and availability.
  2. Guest lectures and visiting professorships: Scholars abroad can offer virtual or in-person lectures, short-term teaching engagements, and visiting faculty support.
  3. Joint research and curriculum enrichment: The platform enables collaboration on research projects, co-authored papers, curriculum upgrades, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  4. Hybrid engagement model: Scholar Connect supports both virtual and physical modes of interaction, ensuring continuity despite geographical barriers.
  5. Advisory structure: An international Advisory Board with eminent academics from the US, UK, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and France guides the platform, while a Kerala-based Administrative Advisory Board ensures alignment with state education policies.

How Malayali scholars and institutions benefit

For Malayali scholars abroad

  • A structured way to contribute to Kerala’s academic growth
  • Opportunities to mentor, teach and collaborate without long-term relocation
  • A chance to stay academically connected with home institutions

For Kerala’s colleges and universities

  • Access to global expertise and international best practices
  • Improved curriculum relevance and research quality
  • Stronger global academic visibility and networks

For students and researchers

  • Exposure to international perspectives
  • Better research mentorship and academic guidance
  • Long-term scope for exchanges and joint degree programmes

Importantly, while the focus is on Malayali scholars, the platform also welcomes non-Malayali international academics interested in collaborating with Kerala’s institutions.

How to register and reap the benefits

For scholars (India and abroad):  Visit scholarconnect.kshec.org, create a profile, list areas of expertise, availability, and preferred modes of engagement.

For faculty and institutions in Kerala: Register on the portal and post specific academic, research or mentorship requirements. Scholars can then respond directly through the platform.

All engagements are designed to be demand-driven, transparent, and outcome-oriented.

What lies ahead

Building on KSHEC’s earlier Brain Gain programme, Scholar Connect is envisioned as a scalable global collaboration model. In the long term, it is expected to expand into student exchange programmes, joint and dual degree offerings, credit transfer mechanisms, and large-scale international research partnerships.

In short, Scholar Connect aims to ensure that Kerala’s academic future is shaped not just within the state, but with the collective knowledge and experience of its global scholarly community.
