Yellow alert for 7 Kerala districts as IMD forecasts heavy rainfall due to deep depression

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather alert on Thursday, forecasting rain or thundershowers in some parts of Kerala in the coming days. Rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places on Thursday and Friday. Similarly, rain or thundershowers are expected at many places on Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
The weather agency also predicts heavy rainfall (yellow alert) in isolated areas across select districts.
Yellow Alert (Heavy rainfall: 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours):
Saturday: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki.
Sunday: Likely in one or two places in the districts of Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad.
Weather factors triggering rainfall
The deep depression formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest on Wednesday. It then shifted to about 120 km southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka) and 550 km south-southeast of Chennai. The depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm. These weather patterns are influencing the forecast for heavy rainfall in Kerala.
