Kerala on red alert: 'Kallakkadal' threatens all coastal districts, high waves expected

Thiruvananthapuram: A red alert has been issued across all coastal districts of Kerala as the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) warned of the possibility of the 'Kallakkadal', the phenomenon causing coastal flooding due to flash swell waves, and strong high waves along the state's coastline.

The warning is in effect from 2.30 am on Saturday until 2.30 am on Monday, with waves ranging from 1 metre to 1.5 metres expected along the coast. Coastal areas, particularly low-lying regions, face an increased risk of seawater inundation and coastal erosion.

The following coastal stretches have been identified for heightened vigilance:

Thiruvananthapuram: Kappil to Pozhiyoor

Kollam: Alappad to Edava

Alappuzha: Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty

Ernakulam: Munambam FH to Maruvakkad

Thrissur: Aatupuram to Kodungallur

Malappuram: Kadalundi Nagaram to Palappetty

Kozhikode: Chombala FH to Ramanattukara

Kannur: Valapattanam to New Mahe

Kasaragod: Kunjathur to Kottakkunnu

Apart from Kerala, coastal areas in Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, as well as the Lakshadweep coast, have also been placed under precautionary warnings due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon.

Safety guidelines for fishermen and coastal residents

Authorities have issued the following precautionary measures:

Relocation from vulnerable areas: Residents in areas prone to severe sea surges should move to safer locations as directed by authorities.

Avoid launching small boats: Small boats and fishing vessels should not venture into the sea during the warning period.

Exercise caution while moving vessels: Launching fishing vessels into the sea and bringing them ashore can both be dangerous during periods of strong waves. Both activities should be avoided when wave intensity increases.

Suspend beach activities: All beach-related activities, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the warning is withdrawn.

Secure fishing vessels and equipment: Boats and other fishing vessels should be safely anchored at harbours. Adequate distance should be maintained between vessels to prevent collisions, and fishing equipment should be secured.

Avoid beach visits and sea-based recreation: Travelling to beaches and engaging in recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.

Remain alert to coastal erosion: Residents should exercise extra caution in areas vulnerable to coastal erosion.
