Kasaragod: Motorists speeding or breaking traffic rules on the six-lane National Highway 66 will now be under constant surveillance. The Automatic Traffic Management System (ATMS) has become operational along the highway, with a control room already functioning and cameras installed on the first stretch between Thalappadi and Chengala.

The cameras record and store data on vehicle speed, use of seat belts, overtaking and reckless driving. A total of 451 cameras are being installed across Kerala, most with 360-degree rotation.

If an accident occurs, the ATMS control room receives an alert with real-time footage. Equipment such as cranes will be deployed to quickly remove damaged vehicles and clear traffic. Calls to the toll-free number 1033 will be immediately relayed to the control room. Ambulances linked to the system will also be dispatched so victims can be taken quickly to the hospital.

Digital warning boards have been placed at several points on the highway. The ATMS will also identify vehicles straying from their lanes and record their registration numbers. The primary aim of the system is to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

54 cameras on the first stretch

On the first completed section of NH 66, 54 cameras have been installed, each capable of monitoring up to 500 metres. Of these, 39 can rotate 360 degrees, while 15 are positioned at points where the service road meets the main carriageway.

The system’s first control room in Kerala has started functioning at Manjeshwar under the supervision of ULCCS, the national highway contractor.
