Heavy rain in Kerala: IMD puts 10 districts on yellow alert, more showers ahead

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 10 districts in Kerala, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning over the next 24 hours. The districts under alert are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
According to the IMD Kerala weather forecast, the state will continue to receive heavy rainfall till November 19, with another spell of intense rain expected on November 22 and 23. On November 22, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki will remain on yellow alert due to the possibility of strong showers.
The IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall at Sannidhanam, Pamba and Nilakkal, which could impact Sabarimala pilgrims and local travel in the next few hours. The department warned that thunderstorms with lightning are likely in one or two places across Kerala till Wednesday.
The weather agency said heavy rain may cause traffic disruptions, poor visibility and waterlogging in several districts. Roads may be blocked due to fallen trees or broken branches, leading to longer travel times.
Authorities have also warned of possible power outages as strong winds and heavy rain can damage electricity lines. Kutcha houses and weak structures may suffer partial damage. Low-lying areas are at risk of flash floods, while hilly regions may face landslides or mudslides due to saturated soil.
The Kerala government has urged residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain and follow official weather updates from the IMD.
