Thiruvananthapuram: Temperatures are rising across Kerala, prompting authorities to advise residents to take precautions against heat-related health risks. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast peak daytime temperatures of 38°C in Kannur, 37°C in Palakkad and Kasaragod, and 36°C in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode.

A yellow alert was issued yesterday for these eight districts – Kannur, Palakkad, Kasaragod, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode – warning residents about heat-related health risks and urging extra caution.

Public safety advisory

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued guidelines to minimise health risks. High temperatures can cause heat stroke, sunburn, dehydration, and other serious health issues.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of clean water, even if you are not feeling thirsty.
  • Avoid beverages that can cause dehydration, such as alcohol, coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks.
  • Limit outdoor activities during peak UV hours.

The alert comes as ultraviolet (UV) levels remain high, particularly from 10 am to 3 pm, increasing the risk of sun-related health hazards.

Authorities emphasise that taking precautions now can help prevent heat-related illnesses and protect vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.
