Kochi: The Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) said on Sunday that it plans to take up the issue of censoring scenes deemed normal in Kerala with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

KFPA secretary Listin Stephen said, “It is not a healthy trend that certain scenes, which are common and acceptable to the people of Kerala, are being restricted or blurred in films.” He highlighted recent CBFC directives asking for cuts in scenes showing beef consumption and rakhi-wearing as examples of actions that filmmakers consider inappropriate.

Stephen added, “Normally, filmmakers and writers are aware of the guidelines and avoid controversial content during production. But now, the situation has become unpredictable; we don't know which scenes will be flagged when we seek certification.”

He also stated that the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has decided to take up the matter and that discussions with other film bodies will follow to decide on further action.

The CBFC recently suggested cuts to 15 scenes in the Malayalam film Haal, starring Shane Nigam. The film’s producer, Juby Thomas, and director, Muhammed Rafeek, have approached the Kerala High Court over delays in the certification process.
