Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, the late Oommen Chandy, describing his life as synonymous with "tirelessness."

Vijayan was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Oommen Chandy Leadership Conclave, organised by the Oommen Chandy Foundation. He highlighted how public service had been a cornerstone of Chandy’s life.

"Even when he (Oommen Chandy) was politically opposed to us, his support for creative proposals was exemplary. He began his political career through student and youth movements and maintained a deep connection with Kerala, particularly Puthuppally. It was this bond that set him apart," Vijayan noted.

Reflecting on their relationship, Vijayan recalled that upon becoming Chief Minister in 2016, Chandy was the first person he sought out.

"Public service was the essence of his life. It seems as though the noted poet Kadamanitta had Oommen Chandy in mind when translating Robert Frost's poem 'Miles to Go Before I Sleep' into Malayalam. His life truly embodied the word 'tireless'," Vijayan added.

In his address, Vijayan emphasised that their friendship transcended political boundaries, allowing them the freedom to discuss and debate openly.

He also remembered the 2004 tsunami, during which Chandy was Chief Minister and the Left party fully supported the relief efforts.

"Kerala has consistently demonstrated unity in times of disaster. It is crucial that we continue this spirit of togetherness for future generations, ensuring they learn from these experiences," Vijayan concluded.

On July 18, people from diverse backgrounds gathered in Puthuppally, Kottayam district, to honour Chandy on his first death anniversary.
