Kerala braces for heavy rain; 2 districts on orange alert, several others under yellow alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday (May 17) afternoon issued a five-day rainfall forecast for Kerala, declaring orange and yellow alerts in several districts.
Orange alert
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha on Sunday (May 17).
An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places. The IMD defines very heavy rainfall as precipitation between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
Yellow alerts declared in multiple districts
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Sunday (May 17).
On Monday (May 18), yellow alerts will remain in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.
For Tuesday (May 19), the IMD has issued yellow alerts in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
Thunderstorms also expected
The IMD said rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is also expected across the state.
