Heavy fines for constructions that remain incomplete after expiry of building permits

Edapal: A heavy fine awaits those who do not complete the building construction within the time limit specified in the permit. If the work is completed after the set deadline, owners will need to pay hefty sums to get a building number.
The permit taken for construction in all the Grama panchayats and municipalities is valid for three years. The construction should be completed within this period otherwise the permit needs to be renewed on payment of a fee. But hefty fines await those who neither complete the construction on time nor renew the permit. This has left many building owners in dilemma.
Many people are not aware of the validity of this permit and the fact that not renewing will invite penalties. Those who apply for building numbers after expiry of the permit will receive a penalty notice. The fine is double the amount of the permit.
For domestic buildings, the fee is Rs 50 up to 150 sq. m, Rs 100 up to 300 sq meter and Rs 150 above 300 sq m. In case of commercial buildings, the rate is Rs 70, 150 and 200 respectively. This becomes double for non-renewal of permits.
