Kerala Police lodge first FIR under new criminal law Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita; Karnataka man booked

New Delhi: The Kerala Police registered its first FIR under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against a person in Malappuram on Monday, officials said.
The first FIR under the newly implemented criminal law was registered at the Kondotty police station in Malappuram district. The case was registered at 12:20 am.

The Kondotty police filed the case suo motu for driving a two-wheeler negligently and in a manner dangerous to human life. The case was against Shafi from Madikeri near Kodagu in Karnataka.
The FIR was registered under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, and Section 194D of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988. The FIR was prepared under Section 173 of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The accused was allowed to go after registering the FIR as it was a bailable offence. However, his bike was taken into custody, police said.
Three new criminal laws came into effect on Monday, bringing far-reaching changes to India's criminal justice system. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
