Dr Haris is a honest person; problem lies with the system, says Minister Veena George, promising a detailed investigation
Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George has responded to the allegations of Dr Haris Chirakkal that the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital is facing a serious crisis due to lack of equipment. The minister ordered a comprehensive investigation in this regard and submit the report. "This is the problem of the system. Careful corrections will be made. Dr Haris is understood to be a very honest and hard-working doctor. He said things very accurately"- Veena George said.
"The number of patients coming to government hospitals and the number of surgeries performed in the last 15 years should be evaluated. The number of people relying on government hospitals has increased significantly. Our health system has improved to the point where not only the poor but also people from all walks of life rely on government hospitals. Our people in foreign countries are facing delays, including MRI, and are being taken here. So many people are coming to the government system. Seeing the increase in the number of people, when we increase the number of ICs, beds and ventilators, the demand for ventilator support is increasing again."
The cardiologists' association itself has found that Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is the health institution that provides the most cardiology treatment in India. The Centre also says that Kerala is the state that has provided the highest number of free treatment in India. More than a thousand posts have been created through the Aardram project. In December 2023, 270 teaching posts were created in the Medical Education Department. This is for the first time in the history of Kerala.
The minister said that this is not enough and that more subtle corrections are needed in the system.
During the responses, the minister also praised Dr Harish commitment. "He had previously said that this system would be better if the patients who come forward were considered as our children or parents. Did you hear what Harris said the other day? He did three surgeries. During the fourth surgery, there was a complaint in the equipment. You should pay attention to what he said later. A boy, similar to his son's age visited the hospital. That is very important." said the minister.
"If there is any delay in progress, it will be examined. Don't make it seem like all government hospitals are like this. Government hospitals are a haven for the common man. Don't break the trust of the people,” the minister said. Dr Haris wrote these things openly because he has trust in this system. the minister said.
Dr Haris revealed on Facebook the other day that the Medical College Hospital is facing a serious crisis due to lack of surgical equipment. Haris Chirakkal, head of the urology department, said that he is considering resigning as he is helpless in front of poor patients. However, the allegations were rejected by the health department authorities. Haris Chirakkal later withdrew the posts, stating that he was facing limitations.
