Thrissur railway station to get new facelift; design gets approval

Thrissur: A decision has been taken in connection with the development of Thrissur railway station in a way that preserves the cultural richness of the city. Although a plan for the station's development was approved earlier, a decision regarding the structural design of the building had not been made. This new decision was taken after considering the suggestions put forward by Union Minister Suresh Gopi during a meeting attended by the district collector, people's representatives, and senior railway officials.
The railway station building in Thrissur will be constructed to blend modernity with tradition, which is a hallmark of the district. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 390.53 crore. The design of the station has been conceptualiaed similarly to many other railway stations in the country that are built like airports. Separate gates have been proposed for entering and exiting the railway station.
The new building will be a three-storied structure. The ground floor will facilitate parking, while ticket counters will be set up on the second floor. Besides this, a multi-level parking and apartments for railway employees will also be included. The construction is planned to meet the demands of the next 100 years. It has also been mentioned that an excellent hotel will be established as part of the new project.
As of now, there are four platforms at the station, and as part of the new project, one more platform will be constructed. With the design of the project approved, construction work will begin soon.
Apart from Union Minister Suresh Gopi, district collector Arjun Pandian, City Police Commissioner R Ilango, Mayor MK Varghese, Dr Manish Thapliyal, Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager and Shaji Zachariah, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), Southern Railway, Ernakulam, participated in the meeting.
