Why chicken is getting costlier in Kerala: Production falls, prices climb

Chicken meat prices in Kerala have witnessed a steep rise, reaching up to ₹184 per kilogram in some areas due to reduced production and growing demand. Traders said prices are currently ranging between ₹160 and ₹185 per kilogram across different parts of the state.
Poultry farmers warned that prices could increase further if production levels do not improve in the coming weeks.
Climate change affects poultry production
Poultry farm owners said changing weather conditions have affected chicken farming, with chick mortality rates increasing significantly.
Earlier, farmers reported that around 10 out of every 100 chicks would die during rearing. However, this number has now increased to nearly 25 due to climate-related challenges and other farming difficulties.
Farmers also noted that chicken growth rates have declined. Normally, chickens raised for around 45 days reach a weight of nearly 1.8 kg, but many birds are now failing to cross even one kilogram during the same period.
Increasing prices of poultry feed have become another major challenge for farmers. Many small-scale poultry operators are reportedly struggling with rising expenses and some have started leaving the business.
Small traders have also raised concerns that lower chicken weight is affecting their profits. Higher transportation costs due to increased fuel prices have further contributed to the rise in retail prices.
Fish shortage increases demand for chicken
The ongoing trawling ban in Kerala has reduced fish availability, pushing more consumers towards chicken as an alternative source of protein.
The combination of lower poultry production and higher demand has created a supply shortage, leading to the current price increase.
Traders expect chicken prices may ease once the trawling ban ends and fish availability improves, but the immediate outlook remains uncertain.
