Kochi: In a surprising development, state BJP president K. Surendran on Monday expressed his desire to step down from his position following the party's setback in the recent bypolls. Meanwhile, it is also reported that Surendran filed a complaint against Sobha Surendran. The nature of the complaint remains unclear, but sources suggest it may be related to party's dismal performance.

According to reports, Surendran communicated his decision to the BJP national leadership. His leadership came under heavy scrutiny after the BJP suffered a debacle in the Palakkad by-election, a long-time stronghold of the party in the state. This loss has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among party members and supporters, many of whom have criticized Surendran's handling of the party affairs in Kerala.

Sandeep Varier, a former BJP member who joined the Congress ahead of the bypolls, also took aim at Surendran, blaming him for the poor performance. After UDF candidate Rahul Mamkootathil emerged victorious in Palakkad, Varier publicly stated that the state leadership should take responsibility for the defeat, naming Surendran for the poor showing.

K. Surendran, who has been at the helm of BJP in Kerala since 2020, has faced increasing pressure following a series of electoral setbacks. Despite his tenure, the BJP has struggled to make significant inroads in the state, and the recent bypoll results have intensified calls for leadership change within the party.
