Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police have registered a case in connection with an allegedly defamatory Facebook post targeting CPM Rajya Sabha MP AA Rahim, officials said on Monday.

The case was filed following a complaint lodged by the CPM leader last week.

According to police, the complaint names users of Facebook accounts identified as “Sreekanth Palickathode” and “Riyas Thathoth”. Authorities allege that a fabricated social media post featuring Rahim’s photograph was created and circulated online.

The post is said to have falsely claimed that individuals arrested in connection with Operation Toofan, the state’s anti-narcotics drive, were members of CPM-affiliated organisations such as the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).

Rahim has alleged that the post was widely shared across social media platforms with the intention of defaming him and misrepresenting the organisations linked to him.

Police said the case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act and the Kerala Police Act.

Officials added that a detailed investigation has been launched to identify the individuals behind the Facebook accounts and determine their involvement in the alleged circulation of the post.
