Who is Pinaki Misra, the man who married Mahua Moitra?

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has reportedly tied the knot with former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and Member of Parliament Pinaki Misra. The private wedding ceremony was held on 3 May in Germany, according to media reports. Photographs from the event showed the couple smiling together, with Moitra seen wearing traditional gold jewellery.

While Moitra is well known for her sharp political rhetoric and fiery presence in the Lok Sabha, her husband, Pinaki Misra, has long been a respected figure in both politics and law.

A legal luminary turned politician

Pinaki Misra, born in 1959, first entered Parliament in 1996, defeating then Union Minister Braja Kishore Tripathy. With a background as a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India, Misra has balanced his legal acumen with a steady political career spanning nearly 30 years.

He has served as a Member of Parliament from Puri, Odisha, under the banner of the Biju Janata Dal. During his tenure, he has contributed to several important parliamentary panels, including the Standing Committee on Finance and the Business Advisory Committee.

A measured voice in Parliament

Known for his calm demeanour and persuasive debating style, Misra is often seen as a contrast to his wife’s high-voltage political personality. His interventions in the Lok Sabha are marked by detailed legal arguments and constitutional clarity, often earning him praise across party lines.

While Mahua Moitra has been in the media spotlight for various reasons, including a major controversy in 2023 that led to her expulsion from the Lok Sabha, Misra has largely maintained a lower public profile. However, their marriage has once again brought him into national focus.

Despite her expulsion, Moitra successfully contested and won the 2024 general election, returning to Parliament from the Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal.
