Kolkata: On Monday, two important hearings will take place regarding the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor from R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. One hearing will be held in the Supreme Court, while the other will take place in a special court in Kolkata.

In the Supreme Court, a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud , Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misrawill begin its session at 2 pm. This hearing was originally set for September 27 but was postponed to Monday. More than 100 lawyers representing 42 parties involved in the case are expected to attend.

Meanwhile, in Kolkata, a special court will hear a plea from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for narco-analysis tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar, and a polygraph test for Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, which oversees the medical college and hospital.

Legal experts emphasise the significance of these hearings. On September 25, the judge rejected bail requests for Ghosh and Mondal, stating that if the charges against them are proven, they could face the death penalty. The CBI claimed in court that evidence related to the case had been tampered with at the Tala Police Station while Mondal was in charge.

The CBI also made a mention of the explosive claim in the remand letter for Ghosh, and Mondal. “During the custodial interrogation of both the accused persons, new additional facts have emerged to the effect that some false records pertaining to the instant case were created/altered in Tala Police Station,” the remand letter read.

These hearings coincide with ongoing protests by junior doctors at the state-run College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati, North 24 Parganas district. The doctors began their strike on Saturday after a colleague was assaulted by the relatives of a woman who died in the hospital.
