Vijay emails Guv staking claim, seeks Cong support for Govt formation; Likely Thursday swearing-in

Chennai: In a whirlwind of political activity following the 2026 Assembly election results, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has reportedly reached out to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar via email to stake his claim to form the new government. Reports indicate that the actor-turned-politician has proposed Thursday, May 7, as the date for his swearing-in ceremony.

Furthermore, in a strategic move to secure a majority in the hung assembly, Vijay has reportedly written a letter to AICC general secretary K C Venugopal seeking the Congress party’s support for government formation.

While TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, it remains short of the 118-seat majority mark. With the DMK-led alliance holding a significant block of seats, the stance of the Congress—which contested as part of the DMK front—is now considered critical.
K C Venugopal has already signalled that the Congress is "open to talks" given the "new situation" in the state. The Governor’s office is expected to review Vijay's claim and the potential support from allies before issuing a formal invitation, potentially marking the end of nearly 60 years of bipolar Dravidian rule.
