Over 50 Tibetan Youth Congress members detained during anti-Xi protest in Delhi

New Delhi More than 50 members of the Tibetan Youth Congress were detained in Delhi while protesting against Chinese President Xi Jinping’s participation in the BRICS Summit, according to reports.

The protesters were detained during demonstrations near Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the BRICS Summit, where they opposed the presence of the Chinese delegation and raised slogans demanding freedom for Tibet.

The protests came amid heightened security in the national capital as India hosted the summit, with security personnel deployed around Bharat Mandapam and other key locations.

Protest against Xi Jinping’s participation

The Tibetan Youth Congress members were also protesting against Xi Jinping’s participation in a dinner and cultural programme at Bharat Mandapam.

The demonstrations took place as Xi visited India for the BRICS Summit, marking his first trip to the country since 2019.

Police sources, however, put the number of Tibetan Youth Congress members detained during the protest at more than 30.

The latest detentions came days after Delhi Police detained activists from Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) over a separate protest against Xi’s visit.

According to SFT, four Tibetan nationals were detained near the Pragati Maidan tunnel after protesting against the Chinese delegation. The activists allegedly displayed banners and raised slogans supporting Tibet’s freedom.

The protests have added to heightened security around Bharat Mandapam and other key locations in Delhi during the BRICS Summit.
