Tesla's first India showroom to open tomorrow in Mumbai’s Kurla

Mumbai: After a long wait marked by tax hurdles and policy negotiations, Tesla will finally debut its retail presence in India on July 15 with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai.

Located in Kurla, near the Apple Store, the 4,000-square-foot facility will serve as the brand’s flagship display space in the country.

The move signals Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian market, a development long anticipated by electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts. The company first hinted at this expansion earlier this year when it posted recruitment notices for multiple positions in India, indicating serious intent to establish operations.

With the Mumbai showroom opening, Tesla is expected to begin sales operations soon, potentially reshaping the Indian EV landscape. The company’s arrival is also seen as a boost to India’s electric mobility ambitions, with expectations that more models and service infrastructure will follow.

While Tesla vehicles have been spotted undergoing homologation and testing on Indian roads in the past, formal sales had been held back due to import duties and negotiations with government authorities. The Kurla showroom marks a significant breakthrough in those discussions and a crucial first step towards local customer engagement.

As India rapidly adopts EVs, Tesla's entry could intensify competition in the premium segment, challenging players like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, who already offer electric models in the country.
