Hyderabad: The Telangana Petroleum Dealers Association (TPDA) moved to quell public anxiety on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, clarifying that there is no shortage of fuel in the state despite widespread rumours that have triggered intense panic buying at retail outlets.

In a formal press statement, the association noted that misleading reports of a scarcity have caused an abnormal surge in sales, with some locations seeing demand spike to nearly three times their normal levels. This sudden rush has led to temporary stock exhaustion at several stations across the country, though the association maintains that the underlying supply remains robust.

Supply Chains Operating Normally

The association provided assurances to citizens that adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are currently held by the three major public sector oil marketing companies: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). According to the TPDA, supply chains from refineries to local depots are functioning normally, and the current "out of stock" signs at some bunks are merely a result of logistics struggling to keep pace with the localised, rapid depletion caused by panic.

Safety Risks and Regulatory Compliance

A significant portion of the press note focused on the hazardous practice of storing fuel in unauthorised containers. The association warned that carrying or storing petrol and diesel in cans violates the norms set by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). Such practices pose a severe fire risk and are not an approved method for fuel storage.

Officials urged the public to act responsibly by purchasing fuel only for their immediate, regular needs and to refrain from spreading unverified news on social media. The association emphasised that cooperation from consumers is essential to prevent further public inconvenience and ensure the safety of the community.
