Tamil Nadu weather alert: Heavy rain likely in Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore

Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall activity in parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore, starting May 24 and continuing through May 27.

According to the weather bulletin, heavy to very heavy rain is expected at isolated locations in the Nilgiris and Ghat regions of Coimbatore district on May 24. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at a few places with thunderstorms and lightning, with gusty wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph is likely to occur at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area. Heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places over Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tiruppur.

On May 25 and May 26, the weather conditions are expected to intensify further. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore districts. Whereas heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Theni, Dindigul and Tenkasi districts. Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts may likely receive heavy rainfall.

For May 27, the IMD has predicted heavy rain at isolated locations in the Nilgiris and Ghat areas of Coimbatore district.

Residents are urged to stay informed by following official weather updates and warnings. During heavy rainfall, they should avoid going into low-lying or flood-prone areas. It is important to secure any loose outdoor items and remain indoors during thunderstorms to minimise risk. Authorities also recommend keeping emergency kits prepared and easily accessible in case of sudden developments.
