Tamil Nadu has revised autorickshaw fares across the state for the first time in 13 years, fixing the minimum fare at ₹50 for the first 1.8 kilometres. The revised rates were notified in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette on Tuesday, October 27.

Under the new fare structure, passengers will have to pay an additional ₹25 for every kilometre after the initial 1.8 km. The revision was notified by the Home Department’s Transport-I section through Government Order (G.O.) Ms. No. 366, issued on October 27, under Section 67 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Tamil Nadu autorickshaw fare: New rates

The revised notification specifies the following charges for contract carriage autorickshaws:

  • Minimum fare: ₹50 for the first 1.8 km
  • Additional distance: ₹25 per kilometre thereafter
  • Ghat fare: Base fare of ₹60, with the ghat fare fixed at 1.2 times the minimum fare
  • Additional ghat fare: ₹30 per kilometre
  • Night fare: 1.5 times the regular fare between 10 pm and 5 am
  • Waiting charge: ₹1 per minute

The revised structure will apply to contract carriage autorickshaws operating in the Chennai Metropolitan Area and other regions of Tamil Nadu.

Why has Tamil Nadu revised autorickshaw fares?

Autorickshaw fares had remained unchanged since August 25, 2013, despite increases in operating costs faced by drivers. The state government has now replaced the earlier fare notifications to introduce revised rates.

The previous fare structure, issued through G.O. Ms. No. 611 on August 25, 2013, set the minimum fare at ₹25 for the first 1.8 km and the additional fare at ₹12 per kilometre. Waiting charges were fixed at ₹3.50 for every five minutes, while night charges were 50% above the regular fare between 11 pm and 5 am.

The latest notification supersedes the earlier Home Department notifications dated August 25, 2013, and October 16, 2014.

The State Transport Authority and the relevant Regional Transport Authorities have been directed to implement the revised fare structure across Tamil Nadu.

The revision changes the minimum fare, per-kilometre charge, night fare timings and waiting charges from the previous rates. Passengers and drivers will be affected by the new structure once it is implemented.
