Who is Sergio Gor? MAGA insider and Trump aide heads to India as new US Ambassador

In a key diplomatic development, the US Senate has confirmed Sergio Gor as the next United States Ambassador to India, a pivotal posting in a region of increasing geopolitical importance.
The confirmation came on Tuesday through an en bloc Senate vote that approved 107 appointments despite an ongoing US government shutdown. The final tally stood at 51 votes in favour and 47 against.
Among other confirmations were Paul Kapur of California as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs and Anjani Sinha of Florida as Ambassador to Singapore.
Who is Sergio Gor?
Trump loyalist, strategist, and now Washington’s man in Delhi A 38-year-old political operative, Sergio Gor, is a longtime ally and confidant of former President Donald Trump.
In August, Trump nominated him not only as Ambassador to India but also as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs — signalling the significance Washington attaches to the region.
Calling Gor a “great friend who has been at my side for many years,” Trump had said, “For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda and help us make America great again. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”
Before this appointment, Gor served as Director of Presidential Personnel, overseeing White House staffing decisions.
Known for his behind-the-scenes influence, he has been a fixture in Republican political circles and conservative media networks.
Gor’s vision for US-India ties
At his Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing last month, Gor described India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.”
He pledged to advance “America’s interests in this important partnership,” stressing the need to strengthen trade and economic ties.
“Improving US-India trade ties will not only bolster US competitiveness but also reduce China’s economic leverage over other nations,” Gor said.
He further noted that India’s role in ensuring regional stability and security “cannot be understated,” adding that a stable South Asia serves the interests of the United States and all nations.
“The US-India partnership will define the 21st century,” Gor told the panel.
India welcomes the appointment
India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed Gor’s confirmation, calling him “one of President Trump’s most trusted aides.”
He said the appointment reflected the high priority Washington places on its relationship with New Delhi, describing it as a step that could further deepen strategic and trade cooperation.
