New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar addressed the Rajya Sabha on Monday, March 9, 2026, delivering a "suo moto" statement on the rapidly deteriorating security situation in West Asia. As the conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran intensifies, the Indian government confirmed it is closely monitoring the safety of millions of Indians residing in the Gulf region.

Amidst protests from the Opposition, Jaishankar emphasised that India’s primary focus remains energy security and the protection of its citizens abroad.

The ongoing war has direct implications for India's economy and its diaspora. During his address, Jaishankar noted that the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met on March 1 to evaluate the risks.

"The Prime Minister continues to closely monitor the emerging developments, and relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure effective responses...Dialogue and diplomacy are the ways forward for all sides to de-escalate," Jaishankar stated. He highlighted that the conflict has already resulted in significant casualties, including "at the leadership level in Iran," referring to the recent death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Key concerns highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA):

  • Safety of the Diaspora: Millions of Indians live and work in Gulf countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
  • Energy Security: With Brent crude hitting $118, India is working to shield consumers from massive fuel price hikes.
  • Regional Stability: India is calling for the "sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states" to be respected to prevent a total regional collapse.

Impact on fuel prices and the Indian economy

Opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised alarms regarding the spike in global oil prices and its ripple effect on the Indian middle class. Responding to these concerns, Jaishankar assured the House that the interest of the Indian consumer is the "overriding priority."

"India is in favour of peace and urges a return to dialogue and diplomacy. We advocate de-escalation, restraint, and ensuring the safety of civilians," he said. "The wellbeing and security of the Indian community in the region is our priority. And our national interests, including energy security and trade, will always remain paramount."
