A joyous wedding season turned into a scene of unspeakable grief in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district after a speeding Audi car rammed into a motorcycle from behind, killing three members of a family on the spot.

The victims were on their way to distribute wedding invitation cards when the fatal accident occurred on a busy highway near Kosta village, police said.

The crash took place on the Rewa–Prayagraj highway, under the Raipur Karchuliyan police station area, barely a few kilometres from the victims’ home. According to officials, the motorcycle was struck with such force that it was completely crushed, leaving the riders with no chance of survival.

Police identified the deceased as Bhagwat Vishwakarma (55), his younger son, and a close woman relative who was accompanying them. Bhagwat’s elder son was scheduled to be married on February 24, and the family had stepped out in the evening to personally invite relatives to the ceremony.

What should have been a routine family errand ended in tragedy when the luxury car, allegedly being driven at a very high speed, ploughed into the motorcycle from behind. Eyewitnesses said the Audi was coming from the Prayagraj side and, after hitting the two-wheeler, went on to crash into the road divider.

“The impact was extremely severe. The motorcycle was mangled beyond recognition, and all three victims were thrown off,” a police officer said, adding that the victims died instantly at the scene.

The Audi driver was detained on the spot, and the vehicle was seized as part of the investigation. Police said a case has been registered, and they are examining all aspects of the incident, including overspeeding and possible negligence.

After receiving information about the accident, police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area to manage traffic and crowds. The bodies were later shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa for post-mortem examinations.

Scenes of grief unfolded at the hospital as family members and relatives arrived, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss. Visuals from the hospital showed devastated relatives waiting outside the mortuary, their wedding celebrations abruptly replaced by mourning.

Locals said accidents caused by speeding vehicles have become increasingly common on the highway and demanded stricter enforcement of traffic rules. “Luxury cars often overspeed on this stretch. There should be regular checks to prevent such tragedies,” a resident said.

Police officials reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and assured that strict legal action would be taken based on the findings. Meanwhile, the Vishwakarma family is left to mourn the loss of three loved ones, just days before what was meant to be a joyous wedding celebration.
