'Are you from BJP?': Rahul Gandhi's sharp retort after question on police families' press conference

New Delhi: Just hours after the families of injured Delhi Police personnel publicly recounted the violence they said officers faced during the NEET paper leak protest at Jantar Mantar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi found himself fielding uncomfortable questions outside Parliament. His response was brief but pointed.

When journalists asked Gandhi to react to the press conference held by the families, the Leader of the Opposition shot back, 'Aap BJP se ho kya?' (Are you from BJP?), before moving on.

The question came in the wake of an emotional media interaction by relatives of police personnel who were injured during the student protest in the national capital.

They alleged that several officers were subjected to sustained violence while performing their duty, but claimed their suffering received little public attention.

At the press conference, family members played videos that they said captured protesters attacking police personnel. They also alleged that anti-social elements had infiltrated the demonstration, escalating the violence against security personnel.

Seeking justice for the injured officers, the families said several policemen sustained serious injuries and continue to undergo treatment.

Sharing personal accounts of the clashes, relatives of two Delhi Police personnel alleged that the officers were surrounded and assaulted by an aggressive mob while deployed to maintain law and order.

One family member claimed their father was 'almost lynched' during the violence, while another alleged that his protective helmet was shattered in the stone-pelting, underscoring the severity of the confrontation they say unfolded at Jantar Mantar.
