Narendra Modi breaks global record with 100 million Instagram followers

New Delhi: Narendra Modi has become the world’s first political leader to reach 100 million followers on Instagram, marking a major milestone in digital political communication.
His follower count is significantly higher than other global leaders. For comparison, Donald Trump has about 43.2 million followers, while Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto has around 15 million followers. Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have approximately 14.4 million and 11.6 million followers respectively.
The combined Instagram following of several major world leaders remains lower than Modi’s individual account, highlighting his strong digital presence.

Modi joined Instagram in 2014 and regularly shares posts covering official meetings, foreign visits, cultural programmes and public interactions. His content often receives high engagement from users in India and internationally.
Analysts say India’s large online population and high social media usage contribute significantly to follower growth for public figures. Posts shared from the Prime Minister’s official account typically include official meetings, foreign visits, cultural programmes and citizen interactions, which tend to generate high engagement from domestic and international audiences.
Domestically, he also leads among Indian political figures on the platform. Yogi Adityanath has about 16.1 million followers, while Rahul Gandhi has around 12.6 million.
In July 2025, global research firm Morning Consult reported that Modi had a 75% approval rating among democratic leaders worldwide.
The achievement also highlights the broader trend of digital diplomacy, where world leaders and institutions use platforms like Instagram, X and others to reach younger audiences and global followers. While follower counts do not necessarily measure political performance or policy impact, they have become one indicator of online influence in modern governance communication.
