Noida airport opens for passengers as inaugural IndiGo flight touches down

Noida: Passengers applauded as the first IndiGo flight from Lucknow landed at Noida International Airport, marking the start of commercial operations at Uttar Pradesh's newest aviation hub.

The long-awaited launch of commercial operations at Noida International Airport finally became a reality on Monday morning as the airport welcomed its first passenger flight, marking a significant milestone for Uttar Pradesh's growing aviation network.

IndiGo flight 6E-2278 departed from Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and landed at the new airport in Jewar at 7:55 am. The historic arrival was met with applause from passengers onboard, while airport authorities celebrated the occasion with a ceremonial water cannon salute.

The landing marks the beginning of regular passenger services at Noida International Airport, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28. The project has long been seen as a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic growth across northern India.

A new gateway for Uttar Pradesh

The airport is expected to become a major transport hub for western Uttar Pradesh, reducing dependence on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport while offering faster access to domestic and international destinations.

For years, travellers commuting between Noida and Lucknow often relied on lengthy road journeys or flights operating through Delhi. The new direct air connection is expected to save time and improve travel convenience for both business and leisure passengers.

More flights set to take off

The launch of operations is only the beginning. Akasa Air is scheduled to start daily services from Noida to Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai from June 16, expanding the airport's network just a day after its commercial debut.

Cargo operations are also set to begin this week, with the airport's first cargo flight expected to depart on June 17. Officials believe the cargo network will strengthen logistics and trade connectivity across the region.

Built for the future

Developed under a public-private partnership model, the airport features a 3,900-metre runway capable of handling large wide-body aircraft. It has been equipped with advanced navigation systems, including Instrument Landing System (ILS) technology and modern airfield lighting to support safe operations in varying weather conditions.

Security has also been given top priority. More than 1,000 CISF personnel have been deployed at the airport, supported by AI-powered surveillance systems and a dedicated police station established by Uttar Pradesh Police.

A landmark moment

The successful arrival of the first commercial flight represents more than just the opening of a new airport. It signals the arrival of a major aviation and economic hub that is expected to drive investment, tourism, employment and regional development for years to come.

As aircraft begin arriving and departing from Jewar, Noida International Airport is poised to become one of India's most important gateways, connecting millions of travellers while reshaping the aviation landscape of northern India.
