New Delhi: The national capital continued to battle severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring to 44.5 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The persistent rise in mercury has led to widespread disruption of daily life, with reduced outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours and increasing health concerns across the city.

The extreme heat has forced residents to adopt precautionary measures, including staying indoors during the hottest part of the day, using umbrellas and protective clothing when stepping out, and increasing intake of fluids and seasonal fruits to combat dehydration. Authorities have warned that heatwave conditions are likely to persist, urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Amid the ongoing heat stress, health experts shared with ANI how to prevent heatstroke and related complications. Dr L. Shyam Singh, Director of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, emphasised that hydration remains the most important protective measure during extreme temperatures.

He advised people to avoid direct exposure to the sun between 11 am and 4 pm, when heat intensity is highest. “To prevent heatstroke, the most important thing is to keep your body hydrated. When you are exposed to sunlight between 11 am and 4 pm, you should drink plenty of water and wear loose clothing to reduce heat absorption,” Dr Singh said.

He further warned against ignoring early symptoms such as dizziness, discomfort, feverish feeling, or uneasiness. “And as soon as you feel feverish, uneasy, dizzy, or uncomfortable, you should immediately rest and apply cold water to your body to cool down,” he added.

With temperatures expected to remain high in the coming days, health authorities continue to urge residents to take preventive steps and avoid unnecessary exposure to the scorching sun.
