Historic thaw: Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule share stage as NCP factions unveil joint Pune poll manifesto

In a rare show of political unity, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) on Saturday released a joint manifesto for the Pune civic body elections, signalling an attempt to consolidate their traditional voter base in the politically crucial city.

The event drew attention as Ajit Pawar, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, and Supriya Sule, MP from Baramati, shared the stage despite the party’s vertical split in 2023.

The joint manifesto focuses on urban infrastructure, affordable housing, improved public transport, water management, and environmental sustainability, with a strong emphasis on strengthening civic services in Pune.

Leaders from both factions said the document reflects a “common minimum programme” aimed at addressing pressing local issues rather than ideological differences.

Addressing party workers, Pawar said Pune’s rapid expansion requires pragmatic governance, faster project execution, and financial discipline. He stressed that civic polls should be fought on development agendas and not reduced to factional politics.

Sule echoed the sentiment, underlining the need for transparent administration, citizen participation, and inclusive growth, especially in newly merged areas of the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Sources within both camps said the decision to release a joint manifesto was driven by electoral arithmetic, as a divided contest could benefit rival parties. Pune has historically been an NCP stronghold, and leaders believe coordinated messaging could help regain lost ground after the split.

However, political observers note that while the symbolism of unity is significant, challenges remain at the grassroots level, where cadre alignment and seat-sharing dynamics are yet to be fully ironed out. The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress, both strong players in the city, are expected to sharpen their campaigns in response.

The coming weeks will test whether this joint front translates into coordinated campaigning on the ground. For now, the shared stage appearance of Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule has sent a clear signal: both NCP factions are willing to set aside differences to stay electorally relevant in Pune’s high-stakes civic battle.
