Mumbai: The commuters now have a single digital solution for public transport as the ‘Mumbai One’ mobile application became operational on Thursday, a day after being launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said.

The app allows users to book a single QR-based digital ticket that can be used across Metro, Monorail, buses, and local trains in the city and its surrounding regions. Previously, each public transport operator had a separate ticketing system, requiring multiple bookings.

Developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the app was available for download from 5 am on Thursday, and more than 500 downloads had been recorded by 8:30 am, officials added.

Will season or return tickets be available?

Currently, commuters cannot book ‘season’ or return journey tickets for suburban trains using the app.

Which services are integrated?

Mumbai One combines the services of 11 public transport operators, including the suburban railways, Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3, and 7, Navi Mumbai Metro, Monorail, and civic bus services such as BEST, TMT (Thane), NMMT (Navi Mumbai), KDMT (Kalyan Dombivli), and MBMT (Mira Bhayandar).

What did PM Modi say about the app?

Launching the app during the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the final phase of Mumbai Metro 3, PM Modi said, “Today, the country is moving towards the vision of One Nation, One Mobility. The Mumbai One app is another step in that direction. Now Mumbaikars will no longer have to stand in long queues for tickets.”

He added that efforts are being made to ensure travelling is seamless, so that commuters do not face difficulties while switching between different modes of transport.

Does the app charge extra?

The MMRDA stated that Mumbai One will not impose any additional charges on users, with all incidental costs borne by the authority. The app supports cashless and contactless transactions.

What additional features does it offer?

The mobile application provides a multimodal journey planner to help users find the fastest and most cost-effective routes. It also gives real-time information on route availability and service advisories.

How robust is the system?

According to the MMRDA, the application is hosted on a MeitY-compliant Google Cloud Platform and powered by Google Kubernetes Engine to ensure data security, scalability, and uninterrupted service. The system can handle up to 50 lakh transactions per day, and the authority expects the user base to grow from 10 lakh to 50 lakh within a year.
